L-Glutamine serves a variety of purposes in the human body, including acting as a precursor to important neurotransmitters: GABA and glutamate. Glutamine can be converted into glutamate, and vice versa via a process known as the glutamate/GABA-glutamine cycle. This is a tightly regulated, homeostatic process in healthy individuals - and normal glutamate levels are as important to healthy brain function as any other major neurotransmitter.
It is generally recommended that adults limit their supplemental glutamine intake to less than 14 grams per day. Taken as directed, glutamine may help support a healthy GI tract, healthy muscle tissue, and a healthy immune system. When used appropriately, in healthy individuals, glutamate levels are not expected to be thrown off balance in the brain by glutamine supplements or glutamine in foods.
